My CrossFit journey began almost one year ago. I had been a high school athlete and a runner. I had run almost every day for the previous five years and was about to complete my eighth marathon and thought I was in decent shape. I was a little bit scared of and a lot annoyed by CrossFit. I mean, they have their own special shoes made specifically to gouge people of money?! Come on, elitists! But my husband Matt had dabbled in it for a few years and decided to become a coach at CrossFit Black Ridge. I knew I needed something more than just running to bump my training up to attain that ever elusive Boston Marathon qualifying time, so I made Matt go with me and hold my hand through my first time. And it was scary and I didn’t know what all the words meant and I realized I wasn’t in that spectacular of shape, but I was excruciatingly sore and insanely hooked. The biggest thing I’d say CrossFit has done for me is improve my self image and how I view the female body. I have spent all of my adult life trying to lose weight and get smaller. I have always wanted to be tiny. And then I started lifting weights at BlackRidge. And I started throwing wall balls. And pull ups, and push ups, and squats, and climbing a rope and I started to figure something out. I needed muscle to do those things. I couldn’t get smaller and smaller and still have a strong, healthy body that would do what I was asking of it. I love what a strong body can do, and not just at the gym but in life. I am fitter than I have ever been and I’m bigger than I would have ever accepted before. The other huge perk to CrossFit is the community of people I get to work out with every day. You won’t meet a more supportive group of people. Sure, it is competitive, and that’s what attracts a lot of us. But if someone finishes before me you better believe they are right there cheering me on to my finish. I like to think I am a better person because of what I’ve learned and who I’ve met thought CrossFit.
